1. BARLEY
Barley is a super food for diabetics because of the following qualities,
✅Soluble fiber has the ability to form a gel when it mixes with liquids in the stomach. The presence of this gel slows down the emptying of the stomach, which prevents carbohydrates from being absorbed too quickly and raising blood glucose levels.
✅People with diabetes experience fluctuations in their blood glucose level after eating carbohydrate-rich foods. Different amounts and types of carbohydrates have a different impact on blood glucose. A measurement known as the glycemic index (GI) ranks foods according to their ability to raise blood glucose. The lower the GI, the less impact it has on blood glucose levels. Barley has a GI of 25, compared to 58 for oatmeal & 55 for brown rice.
✅Magnesium is a mineral that acts as a co-factor in more than 300 enzymes in the body, including enzymes involved in the production and secretion of insulin and the use of glucose. Studies show magnesium levels are lower in people with diabetes than in the general population. One cup of cooked barley contains 122mg of magnesium.
2.GREEN GRAM
Green gram is rich in fibre and is considered low-glycemic. It digests slowly and gradually releases glucose into your bloodstream, stabilizing your blood sugar. Consumption of low-glycemic foods lower your risk for developing diabetes, and since green gram prolongs the release of sugar into your bloodstream, it can help curb your post-meal cravings. This lowers blood glucose, triglycerides and cholesterol and improves glucose tolerance.
3.BLACK GRAM
Fiber in whole black gram is very effective for regulating the uptake of nutrients in the gut, and can therefore, balance the levels of insulin and glucose in the blood. By preventing those dangerous spikes and drops in blood sugar, diabetics can live a more normal life.
4.CHANNA DAL
It has almost no effect on your blood glucose level. This is something that is very important to anyone with diabetes and to many other people as well. Technically, it has one of the lowest indexes of any food on the glycemic index, 8 (where glucose = 100). Its index is 5 according to one study and 11 according to another.
5.JOWAR/SORGHUM
All millets are high in fibre, and jowar is no different. Jowar is packed with good quality fibre which can help facilitate your digestion, manage obesity, regulate blood sugar levels and curb the risk of high blood pressure and strokes.Jowar, being a complex carbohydrate, is digested slowly, prompting a more gradual rise in blood sugar.
6.RAGI
A whole grain is one which contains all three parts of the kernel – the bran, germ and endosperm while refined grains are processed to retain only the endosperm. This makes whole grains healthier as they contain the fiber-dense bran and along with other essential nutrients that are not lost due to processing. Ragi is one such super grain.
The grain’s seed coat is abundant in polyphenols and dietary fibres as compared to rice, maize or wheat. The low glycemic index lessens food cravings and maintains the digestive pace, consequently, keeping blood sugar within the safe range.
7.KAMBU/PEARL MILLET
Kambu is one of the best ingredients that diabetics can include in their diet. It is low in GI and it prevents blood sugar spikes and keep us satiated till lunch. Diabetic patients when they include traditional food like this that is full of nutrients, good fats and low in glycemic index can keep blood sugar level under check without any great effort.
8.DRY NUTS (ALMONDS & WALNUTS)
Nuts are not only crunchy, tasty and nutritious, but also extremely good for diabetic patients. Nuts provide healthy fats, are rich in proteins and very low on carbohydrates. But be sure to not indulge in more of it. We have added these nuts in restricted quantities so that we get the complete benefits out of it.
